A genre breakdown: what keeps players on an anarchy server, which events pull them out of their bases, and why a server without anti-cheat and a world border does not survive.
Anarchy is a genre with no rules, claims or moderation in the usual sense. It sounds simple, but these are exactly the servers that most often die within a month. Here is what a living anarchy server is made of and how it differs from a griefing server.
Anarchy, griefing, survival: what is the difference
| Survival | Griefing | Anarchy |
|---|
| Claims | yes | partial | none or almost none |
| PvP | limited | allowed | everywhere |
| Cheats | banned | banned | often partly allowed |
| Admin role | moderation | moderation | technical support only |
| What keeps players | building and economy | raids | reputation, clans, war |

Why anarchy servers die
- The first week decides everything. A hundred people show up, scatter, kill each other, and by week two there is nobody left to play with.
- No progression. If everything you can do takes one evening, there is no reason to come back.
- Cheaters with no limits. Total freedom without anti-cheat turns into a game for one person with a flying client.
- An empty map. Without events the server looks dead, even when people are on it.
What gives anarchy a second life
- Scheduled events. Airdrops, temporary mines, chests at random points: a reason to leave your base and run into other players.
- Currency for heads. A separate currency that drops only for killing players, and a store where it is spent. It brings PvP to life instantly.
- Clans and wars. Us versus them is the strongest retention mechanic in the genre.
- Bosses. A common enemy gathers on an arena people who would otherwise never meet.
- Seasons. A wipe every two to three months with stats preserved: everyone gets an equal start again, and veterans have something to be proud of.

One simple rule works: on anarchy, content has to bang players' heads together. Anything you can do alone in a corner of the map, the genre cannot hold.
Technical requirements of the genre
- Anti-cheat, even if cheats are "allowed". You still have to draw a line: flight and killaura kill a server faster than any griefer.
- A world border and pregeneration. Anarchy is a genre where everyone scatters in every direction, and chunk generation becomes the main load.
- Logs. You need them even without rules: dupes and bugs cannot be investigated without them.
- Spawn protection. The one place where rules must exist, otherwise newcomers get killed at the spawn point and never come back.
Ready-made anarchy builds
We built several anarchy projects with content already set up: blood coins for heads, events with voting, named bosses, combat buggies and an economy with several currencies. Everything is linked together and installs in an evening.
