An honest breakdown: in half of all cases you do not need a launcher at all. And if you do, here is what is inside, what breaks, and where you cannot cut corners.
You need a launcher when a player has to install something before joining: a resource pack, mods, a custom client. It downloads the files itself, keeps them updated and launches the game, instead of an instruction like "unpack the archive into the .minecraft folder" that makes half of your people leave.
| Situation | Do you need a launcher |
|---|---|
| A vanilla server with plugins | no, the regular client is enough |
| Your own resource pack | no, the server sends the pack itself |
| A modded build (Forge, Fabric) | yes, otherwise people install mods by hand |
| Cracked login without a license | yes, the launcher provides authorization |
| You want your brand on the desktop | yes, but that is cosmetic |
If your server runs on plugins, you do not need a launcher. A resource pack is delivered with one line in server.properties, and it works for everyone, mobile players included.
There are public launcher builders: you point to the build files and get a ready exe. It is fast, but the launcher will be generic and carry someone else's branding inside.
Custom development gives you your own interface, your own authorization and integration with the site, for example a rank visible right in the launcher. It costs more and needs maintenance with every Minecraft update.

We build launchers to order, either as part of a project or on their own. If you are unsure whether you need one, write to us: often the task is solved with a resource pack from the server and no launcher at all. Catalog: websites and everything for them, studio services.
We have been building server builds, plugins and websites for Minecraft servers since 2022. A ready-made solution goes onto your hosting in an evening, and we install it for free.
