CloudGrief (1.16.5) — A Real Donation Machine for Your Project!

Welcome to our new article!

Griefing servers live on donations: players want to protect their base, wreck someone else's, and stand out from the crowd. That's why we built CloudGrief as a real donation machine, with eight ranks, a server store with 55 items, crates and titles that work from the very first launch!

We completely rebuilt this build: moved it from 1.12.2 to the Paper 1.16.5 core, replaced all plugins with clean, up-to-date ones, set up authorization, redrew every menu in a single style and cleaned out third-party data. There is one server, with no proxy and no lobby: download it, start it, play. Players can join with 1.16.5 clients and newer. And most importantly, the build is free: we explain how to get it at the end of the article.

There's plenty of content in the build: 41 GUI menus, 8 ranks, 13 store sections, 3 crate types, 15 titles, jobs, quests, clans, an event and four Cloud Delight plugins. If you don't want to read the whole article, here is a short (incomplete) list of what the build includes:

Paper 1.16.5 core, joining with 1.16.5 clients and newer
A single server with no proxy and no lobby: it starts right after download
Optimized core settings: mob and entity limits, fast redstone and explosions, Aikar launch flags
A registration and authorization system: account protection even for players joining with cracked clients
An optional resource pack with a 3D logo, rank icons and menu icons, served by the server itself
A consistent build style: 41 GUI menus in a unified design
A main menu with 11 sections and a menu book in every player's inventory

A PvP arena at spawn
Random teleport: regular and "near players"

A player report system
12 NPCs and holograms with spawn tips
4 Cloud Delight plugins: CloudSkills, CloudUniversalBow, CloudCommandStaff, CloudSphereChest
The "Sphere Chest" event with its own guardian
4 staff groups with configured permissions + a group for YouTubers

And that's only the most important and basic stuff!

Let's go through it all in order. Players appear on a large spawn that has everything they need: NPCs, jobs, a crate machine, a PvP arena and portals to other worlds. All text in the build uses trendy small caps with a red-orange gradient, and holograms immediately tell newcomers where to start:

Right after joining, a player registers with the /reg command and logs in with /login on later visits. Until they log in, they can't move or type commands, and after 30 seconds without logging in the server kicks them. The build allows cracked clients, so this account protection is essential, and it is already configured. After the first login the player immediately receives a starter kit, and always has the "Main Menu" book in their inventory.

A word about the design: the build has an optional resource pack that the server distributes itself, so no third-party hosting is needed. A player who accepts it sees the 3D logo in the TAB header, in the scoreboard and on the welcome hologram, rank and staff icons in chat, in the player list and above their head, and hand-drawn icons on the main menu buttons. A player who declines sees plain text, and everything keeps working.

The /menu main menu brings together all the main sections: kits, information, customization, crates, random teleport, ranks, teleports, the store, the villager market, earning money and links. Players don't need to memorize dozens of commands, everything is a couple of clicks away.

One of the most useful menu buttons is random teleport: the regular one moves the player to a safe spot in the world within 1000 blocks, and starting from Caesar, a "near players" teleport unlocks, for those who came to grief:

As for ranks, the build has as many as 8: Warrior, Knight, Titan, Wither, Caesar, Chronos, Paladin and Mephisto. Ranks inherit from each other in a chain, and every next tier gives new commands, its own gear set once a day, more homes, more region claims, more auction slots and a bigger mob money multiplier:

Warrior: /hat, /ec, /craft, 3 homes, 3 regions, ×1.2 money from mobs
Knight: /ptime, /invsee, 5 homes, 4 regions, ×1.3
Titan: /clear, /near, /socialspy, 10 homes, 5 regions, ×1.5
Wither: /day, /night, /tptoggle, 30 homes, 6 regions, ×1.7
Caesar: /feed, /heal, /nick and RTP near players, 50 homes, 8 regions, ×2
Chronos: /sun, /rain, /repair, /setwarp, /broadcast, 75 homes, 10 regions, ×3
Paladin: /fly, /god, 150 homes, 15 regions, ×4
Mephisto: /kick, /ban, 150 homes, 20 regions, ×4

Speaking of permissions, the build comes with 4 staff groups already configured: Helper, Mod, Curator and Admin, plus a separate YouTuber group with Chronos permissions for bloggers. Each staff group inherits the permissions of the previous one.

Helper mutes, kicks, goes into vanish and handles reports; Mod adds bans, jail and inventory viewing; Curator adds gamemode, IP bans and management of all regions; Admin can do everything.

Turning to gameplay in more detail, let's start with the main thing for any griefing server. Griefing in the game world is not restricted at all: TNT, lava and fire work, which means any unprotected build can be blown up. You can protect yourself with a region claim: the player selects an area with a wooden axe and creates a region. A single region can be up to 150,000 blocks, and the number of regions depends on the rank: from 2 for a regular player to 20 for Mephisto.

Spawn, meanwhile, is fully protected: you can't build, break, blow things up or take damage there, except on the PvP arena, where PvP is enabled.

For early income, the build has two jobs right at spawn. The first is the sawmill: a player gets 15 coins right away for every tree chopped.

The second is the mine: every ore mined pays from 10 to 100 coins (coal 10, iron 20, gold 25, quartz 30, diamond 50, emerald 100), ore respawns after 10 seconds, and the miner NPC pays out the salary:

Besides jobs, hunting also brings in money: killing mobs gives a player from 1 to 15 coins multiplied by their rank's multiplier, and killing a player also gives 5% of the victim's money. Money drops as a gold nugget, so anyone can pick it up!

All the trading and quest NPCs are gathered in one corner of spawn: the shop, jobs, tasks, quests, missions and the auctioneer. At the auction, players sell and buy items from each other: a lot stays up for 6 hours, and the number of slots depends on rank, from 3 for a regular player to 25 for Paladin and Mephisto.

The shop and the server store are the main source of income for any griefing server, so we paid special attention to the /shop server store: it has 13 sections and 55 items. The donor currency is "rubles", granted with a single command, so a donation site connects with no extra work. Some items can also be bought with in-game coins. Let's look at the sections in more detail:

  • Special donor items:
The topper set with Protection VII and a sword with Sharpness IX, the Chaos Katana and the Winter Katana, assassin, Ares and Poseidon runes, Hermes, Zeus and Hydra amulets, PvE tools with Efficiency VIII, and every item gives its own effects while held or worn.
  • Super arrows, super potions and super totems:
6 arrow types (from poison to Instant Damage III), 5 potions such as "Zeus's Fury" and "Angel Wings", 4 totems with fire resistance, strength, speed and haste. Plus "trap escapes" and an unbreakable shield and elytra.
  • Spawners:
13 spawner types, from cows and pigs to blazes, wither skeletons, ghasts and zombie villagers. You can also mine a spawner in game: a Silk Touch pickaxe is enough.

Another source of income is crates. The build has 3 crate types: donor crates (ranks from Knight to Paladin), ruble crates (from 1,000 to 10,000) and title crates. They are opened at the crate machine at spawn, everyone sees the winnings, and if the crate gives a rank lower than yours, your rank stays the same. A donor crate key can be claimed for free every 15 minutes via /free, which keeps players on the server very well.

A special direction in customization is titles. The build has 15, in three menus: hype titles, game titles and Twitch titles. A title is shown next to the nickname, drops from the title crate, and the free "What?" title can be claimed in /free:

For players who like completing tasks, the Quest Giver NPC has a chain of 5 tasks worth 14,000 donor rubles in total, and the "Mission" NPC hands out a New Year task for another 6,666 rubles. After the fifth Quest Giver task, the Farmer's tasks unlock too. Hours spent on tasks turn into purchases in the server store, and so into the wish to buy more.

For fans of team play, the build has clans: every clan has its own base, treasury and a rating from Bronze to Titanic rank. Clans fight each other in clan wars with up to 5 fighters per side and spend the treasury on upgrades: extra slots, health and combat effects for war.

Creating a clan costs 25,000 in-game coins, a clan holds up to 10 members, and friendly fire is off.

Fair play isn't forgotten either: anti-relog for 25 seconds of combat (logging out in combat means death) and cooldowns on golden apples, pearls, chorus fruit, fireworks and totems, and you can report a rule breaker with the /report command. Chat is split into local and global, and the scoreboard shows the player's rank, title, coins, rubles, kills and online count.

Finally, the build includes four Cloud Delight plugins:

CloudSkills: 4 combat skills: Zeus's Blessing (lightning), Hellfire, Poisoner and Pilot
CloudUniversalBow: a universal bow with three modes: arrows, rocket and sword projectile
CloudCommandStaff: a command staff that randomly applies one of 10 effect sets, from blinding everyone around to a zombie horde and a Wither
CloudSphereChest: the "Sphere Chest" event, described below

Now on to a special part of this build: an event that lures players out of spawn into the open world!

All events:

Event: "Sphere Chest"

An event from our CloudSphereChest plugin. Two hours after the previous event ends, a chest surrounded by a region appears in the world within 200 blocks of the center, and the server announces it 15 minutes ahead. You can't just open it: you need a "Sphere Key", dropped by the Sphere Guardians that protect the chest. Inside are diamonds, emeralds, golden apples, experience and new keys. And while everyone rushes to the chest, their bases are left unattended, the perfect moment for griefing!

To sum up briefly: CloudGrief gives a griefing server everything it needs, with free griefing, region claims, jobs, tasks, clans and an event that all work right after launch. Any element can be easily replaced, removed or added, so you can adjust the build to your wishes without much trouble!

Put together, you get a build that can easily attract and hook new players and bring in income thanks to eight ranks, a server store, crates and titles!
